Influenced by George Inness and the American Tonalists as well as the classic “mountain and rivers” poets of China, I strive to say as much as possible with as little as possible–to subtly suggest rather than to overtly describe the landscape. My subject matter is the mood that arises from the quiet contemplation of nature, a seeing of a greater reality that lies beneath mere surface, an observation rather than an analysis that leaves some mystery in a painting, something unresolved that allows the viewer to explore the painted landscape and make discoveries within it.
With an eye made quiet by the power
Of Harmony and the deep power of joy,
We see into the life of things.
~ W. Wordsworth, 1798
“To the attentive eye, each moment of the year has its own beauty, and in the same field, it beholds, every hour, a picture which was never seen before, and which shall never be seen again.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
